Tamil New Year 2025

Celebration into new year

Tamil New Year, known as Puthandu or Varusha Pirappu, is celebrated on April 14, 2025, marking the first day of the Tamil solar calendar and the month of Chithirai. This day is astrologically significant as it coincides with the Sun’s transition into Mesha Rasi (Aries), signifying the beginning of a new astrological cycle. The current tamil new year name is Visuvaavasu. Tamil calendar repeats every 60 years and each of the 60 years is associated with a tamil name.

Sun’s Transition into Aries: The Tamil New Year begins when the Sun enters Aries (Mesha Rasi), which is considered the first zodiac sign in Vedic astrology. This transit represents renewal, vitality, and the peak of solar strength during its northern journey (Uttarayana).

In preparation for Puthandu, women adorn the entrances of their homes with intricate Kolam designs to invite happiness and prosperity. Either on the eve or the day of the festival, families arrange a special tray filled with auspicious items such as fruits and flowers. It is also customary for many to take a special herbal bath, with women traditionally using turmeric. On Puthandu, people dress in new clothes, exchange greetings by saying “Puthandu Vazthukal,” and seek blessings from elders to mark the beginning of a joyful and prosperous new year.

  • Kani Kanuthal: Viewing auspicious items like gold, fruits, flowers, and betel leaves early in the morning is believed to bring good fortune throughout the year.
  • Panchangam Reading: Families consult astrologers or read the almanac to understand planetary movements and their effects on personal and global affairs.
  • Prayers to the Sun: Special pujas are performed for the Sun God in open spaces to seek blessings for prosperity and well-being. Chanting the Gayatri Mantra during this period is considered powerful for spiritual enlightenment.
  • Symbolism of Chithirai: The month of Chithirai represents brightness, fertility, and abundance. It aligns with nature’s rejuvenation as mango trees bear fruit and neem blossoms appear—a symbolic reminder of life’s balance between happiness and sadness.
